Smithson Valley Team Wins District’s First State Golf Title

Updated May 15, 2024 - Smithson Valley High School is celebrating its first state championship golf title after winning the 2024 5A state tournament on April 30 at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.

The team scored 4 under par over 2 rounds to win the gold medal after placing second last year. With a two-day score of 572, the Rangers finished 14 strokes ahead of second place team.

The starting five players are seniors this year and have been on a mission to win the state title since they were underclassman. They include Cole Cantu, Ryan Griff, Anniston McIlwain, Aiden Paige and Zach Seader. Coaches are Jason Pape and Brooklyn Sutton.

In addition to winning the tournament, all five finished even-par or better with Griff taking the second in individual play; McIlwain finished eighth; and Cantu, Paige and Seader tied for ninth place.

Additional State Golf Honors

In addition to the SVHS boys team championship, Comal ISD had several additional golf medalists including the first for Pieper High School, a silver from freshman Dresden Bounds and two bronze in 4A for Davenport High School.
