Tired of the pandemic humdrum? Escape your living room and another night of streaming for the beat of a different drum. Step out to Canyon Night of Percussion on Thursday, April 29, at Canyon High Stadium.
Percussion students from Canyon High, Canyon Middle and Church Hill Middle Schools, including Canyon’s Steel Band, Latin Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Church Hill Samba Group, will host a unique and free concert that will have you tapping your toes.
The concert also will include two guest artists – Russ Miller and Rich Redmond. Russ has played on more than 500 albums with sales of over 30 million copies. He has toured or recorded with Gloria Estefan, Steve Perry, Nelly Fuertado, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Andrea Bocelli, Psychedelic Furs and countless others.
Rich is the long-time drummer for ACM Artist of the Decade Jason Aldean. He has been the top studio drummer in Nashville for the last 20 years, recording for Bryan Adams, Trace Adkins, Kelsea Ballerini, Garth Brooks, Florida Georgia Line, Miranda Lambert, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Rogers, Kid Rock, Darius Rucker and many more.
The percussion students will perform under the direction of Brad Arnold and Rene Gonzalez.
One of the pieces they perform will be arranged by Joey Aldrich, two-time All-State percussionist and a senior at Canyon.
“The kids not only get to see world class musicians perform LIVE, but they also get to play alongside them,” says Arnold, percussion and jazz director of the Canyon High Band. “The guys we are bringing in are at the top of the musical world right now. Bringing in top-notch talent to play with the kids is an experience that they might not ever get to do again.
“No one else does anything like this. The kids take great pride in the fact that they get to do something that most kids just don't get a chance to do.”
COVID social-distancing guidelines will be required and guests we will be asked to wear masks.
While the event is free, donations will be accepted to help support these bands and future performances.
