Canyon High Senior Receives Rare Perfect ACT Score

October 14, 2024 - For one Canyon High School senior, hard work and dedication does pay off. Neil Dobbs returns from ACT testing with a perfect score of 36. The theatre student shares how his pursuit of advanced academics, use of study tools like Khan Academy, and test day regimen aided him in his ability to achieve the rare perfect score.

The ACT is a timed test that assesses a student's college readiness. Depending on the college, the ACT can be used to consider admission, as well as an applicant's eligibility for scholarships. Less than one percent of test takers receive a perfect score.

“I was really surprised to receive a perfect score, but my parents were even more excited,” says Dobbs.

From his parents' support to the confidence he gained from being an active member in Tech Theatre, Dobbs’ time at CHS has allowed him to grow into an individual who takes initiative and practices accountability. Dobbs is also an Eagle Scout, which helped him further develop his leadership and organizational skills.

These traits have largely contributed to his academic success, encouraging him to pursue courses that were intimidating at first.

Dobbs explains that the preparation he received in high-level classes led to his perfect score. Those classes include AP biology, calculus BC, physics C, AP chemistry, AP literature, AP government and economics, and UT OnRamps statistics. Dobbs is also a member of the UIL calculator and UIL science teams at CHS.

“I studied using Khan Academy and reviewed my notes from classes that related to the test like math and English,” says Dobbs, who currently is ranked third in his class.

Although studying is important to prepare for the ACT, Dobbs also shares how taking care of yourself before the test is just as, if not more important.

“I made sure to get a good night's sleep the night before and ate a large breakfast in the morning. Doing this helped me focus all of my energy on taking the test.”

Dobbs is currently interested in applying to state schools like the University of Texas Austin or Texas State University, but he has also expressed possibly attending Yale University. In his pursuit of higher education, Dobbs hopes to receive a degree in mechanical engineering and technical theatre with the goal of entering a career designing sets for productions.

Comal ISD is proud to have a student such as Dobbs representing its mission and values.  Through hard work and determination, he is a shining example of how Comal ISD students are growing greatness!

Thank you Neil for sharing your Path to Success!
