Language Programs
Spanish Immersion
The Spanish Immersion Program is designed for English-speaking students who wish to become fluent in
Spanish. Students enter the program in first grade. Comal ISD employs a “90/10” Spanish immersion model. In first grade, 90 percent of the instruction is delivered in Spanish. English is gradually added from grade level to grade level until students are instructed 50 percent in Spanish and 50 percent in English by the fifth grade. Students are expected to continue in the program through fifth grade.
Spanish Immersion teachers follow a scope and sequence for Language Arts that is unique to meet the goals of the program. The scope and sequence for mathematics, science, and social studies match a traditional English speaking classroom with the only difference being Spanish as the language of instruction. The inherent nature of these programs creates an active parent-school partnership, which is essential for the success of the program and the student.

Dual Language One-Way
Dual Language refers to a program that provides literacy and content instruction to participating students in two languages, promoting bilingualism, biliteracy, and social-cultural competence in a rich academic setting.
A One-Way Dual Language Spanish Immersion Program is a developmental bilingual program integrating Emergent Bilingual students in two program languages, English and Spanish. The primary focus of this model is to develop the English language while continuing to develop their skills in Spanish.
Both program languages are incorporated through all content areas following a 50/50 model employing instructional practices that develop high levels of language and literacy proficiency. This approach emphasizes attaining high levels of academic achievement and developing an appreciation for language and culture with the outcome of reaching bilingualism and biliteracy.
Our goal is to develop fluency and literacy in both English and Spanish so that students may succeed in the secondary CALP program and be college, career, and military ready. In this educational environment, we provide communicative and academic language development through an interactive, cross-cultural setting. Students are taught by a bilingual certified educator who has full command of both languages.

Advanced Languages
The Comal Advanced Languages Program continues second language learning in Spanish at the middle school level as students matriculate from the elementary Dual Language Program (DLP) or Spanish Immersion Program (SIP). For parents of fifth grade students in DLP or SIP interested in moving to CALP during middle school, an informational parent video will be shared as students meet with their counselors for course selection. That video will also be found below.
